So I’m leaving for Cozumel for vacation at the end of the month. It’s a small island in Mexico surrounded by amazing white sanded, clear watered beaches. Basically, I’m under pressure right now to look great in a bikini. After the holidays and my birthday, I usually struggle to get back in shape. Here are some photos of me a little before Thanksgiving at the New York Comic Convention in October of 2013:
I’m Roman Catholic and unfortunately, between work, modeling, and my social life, it’s been getting more and more difficult to practice my faith as time becomes limited. However, I’ve found a way to incorporate my faith in what I do that’s nourishing and for bettering myself. Getting fit is just like following a religion - it requires sacrifice and discipline. For the past few years, I’ve given up gluten for Lent (the 40-day time period between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday). This has been working out great for me to jump start my fitness after the holidays in time for summer. Now, I do not have a gluten sensitivity, but you’ll be surprised how many foods that are horrible in excess are eliminated. Some of these foods include pizza, pasta, burgers, breaded/battered fried foods like mozzarella sticks, doughnuts, cheesesteaks, etc. I’ve heard a lot of people who’ve been on gluten-free diets say that gluten made them feel bloated. I definitely am less bloated now than how I was before and I’m not sure if it’s the gluten than caused the bloating, but either way, this method managed to eliminate the foods that do. This shouldn’t surprise anyone.
I want to share some of my meals that I happened to capture:
After grocery shopping: Pastas, bread, wraps, and chips. Most of these are made of brown rice which offers more fiber than wheat. I never had the edamame crackers before, but they are pretty good!
Breakfast dish: No-crust spinach, onion, and tomato quiche, homefried rosemary potatoes, and a mandarin. Instead of coffee, I had a cup of english breakfast (haha) tea with no honey, milk, or sugar. I also always have a glass of water with every meal, especially first thing in the morning.
Of course, just like every other Asian, I love sushi. My favorite sushi is the no frills kind and sashimi - hold the panko bread crumbs and mayo, please! I recently learned that soy sauce has wheat so I ask for gluten-free soy sauce when I order out. Thankfully, I now live in Park Slope, Brooklyn, where there’s a health food store on literally every block. I also bought some Kikkoman gluten-free soy sauce for home.
Most frozen yogurt joints will specify which flavors contain gluten. I got this treat at 16 Handles: Pecan praline frozen yogurt and raspberries topped with wet walnuts (walnuts with honey). Delicious!
For my birthday, my boyfriend took me to the famous Peter Luger’s Steakhouse in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The steak for two was more than enough for us (I love it “cooked” rare to medium-rare), so we were able to take some home. Here is my steak and eggs breakfast with Peter Luger’s signature home fries and creamed spinach (not actually creamed, but had an awesome creamy texture).
Here are some pictures that I took about an hour ago, well into my gluten-free diet with some exercise. I wish I took some “before” photos, but those would probably scare you.
Not yet where I’d like to be, but getting there! For those of you asking, I like to run and lift weights. When I can, I attend bootcamp, pilates, total abs, and Zumba classes at the gym I’ve been a member with for about 7 years. It’s great because my membership extends to all locations so I can use it when I’m at my parents’ in Jersey, when I’m in Manhattan after going to appointments, go-sees, auditions, and castings, AND where I live and work in Brooklyn. Zumba is fun because I loooove to dance and when I do, I sweat my butt off but it doesn’t even feel like I’m working out. I also went snowboarding two days ago which was INTENSE. I’m still sore from that day so I’m taking a rest.
So there was my first fitness journal post for the year. After the numerous questions and comments about my diet, exercise routine, and Lenten journey, I’m glad I finally found the time to share it all. I’m on my day off from work so I had some time, but hopefully, I’ll be able to keep it up. I will, though, post some Cozumel photos for sure! I will also be shooting while I’m out there. Let me know what else you’d like to see me post and feel free to ask any questions!
I love sweet surprises. Thank you @phillipenover ♡♥
